GM Wins Chinese Honor
General Motors China was named one of China's most influential multinational corporations in a survey sponsored by a group of Chinese financial, media, consulting and market research firms. The survey solicited the opinions of industry experts, multinational corporation employees and members of the general public for candidates. GM has approximately 13,000 employees and has invested over $2 billion in China.

Boeing Receives Large Orders from Asian Carriers
Lion Air, Indonesia's first low-cost carrier, has entered into a preliminary agreement for up to 60 Boeing 737s worth $3.9 billion. Deliveries are expected to begin early in 2006. Also, Boeing and Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE) have completed a sales agreement for 20 Boeing 737s, plus purchase rights for 20 additional airplanes. The agreement, valued at $1.1 billion, represents SALE's first direct order of 737s from Boeing. Deliveries are to begin in late 2006.

FedEx Launches Direct Connection Between Mainland China and Europe
FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., has launched express air cargo direct service from mainland China to Europe. The flights will provide daily service from Shanghai, China, to Frankfurt, Germany using MD-11 freighters. FedEx now has the authority to operate 26 flights a week out of China. FedEx is based in Memphis, Tenn.

Dell Computer Reports Significant Jump in Foreign Revenue
Dell Computer of Round Rock, Tex., reported a major increase in revenues from outside the United States for its fiscal first quarter ending April 29. Overseas business, fueled by large jumps in the Europe/Middle East/Africa, and in Asia-Pacific/Japan markets (20% and 19%, respectively) grew by 21% over the prior year's figures. This represented 42% of the $13.4 billion in revenue that the company reported for the quarter. This is a 16% increase in sales over the prior year's figure of $11.5 billion.

Verdasys to Sell Product in Japan
Verdasys, Inc., a maker of computer data security software, and Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions (MBSD), announced a strategic partnership for the sale of the company's Digital Guardian in Japan. Tokyo's MBSD is an information security service provider. Verdasys is based Waltham, Mass.

Lionbridge Announces Expansion in India
Lionbridge Technologies announced that it will open a new software testing facility in Chennai, India. The center will initially employ about 200 people. Lionbridge, a worldwide provider of testing services, is based in Waltham, Mass.

Avon Obtains Chinese Approval
Manhattan-based Avon became the first company approved by the Chinese government to sell its products door-to-door in that nation. The company began selling in April in Beijing, Tianjin, and Guangdong Province following approval by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Globecomm Systems Expands in Africa
Hauppauge, NY-based Globecomm Systems Inc. announced that it has launched a new managed mobile network services platform into Africa utilizing the company's Internet Protocol network architecture. The company also announced that it has been awarded an $8.1 million contract from the National Air Navigation Services Co. (NANSC) in Egypt to design and install a satellite-based network connecting nineteen remote NANSC sites to the Cairo Air Navigation Center.

Hess Purchases Russian Oil Firm
Amerada Hess Corp. of New York announced that it has acquired a 65% interest in Trabant Holdings International, a company which owns 100% of ZAO Samara-Nafta, an exploration and production company located in the Volga-Urals region of the Russian Federation, for $25 million. Samara-Nafta currently produces approximately 7,500 bbls/day of high quality crude from fields in the Mamurinsky license area in the southern Samara region.

PanAmSat Expands in China and Mexico
PanAmSat Corp., the Wilton, CT-based communications company, announced that it entered into an agreement with China Radio International (CRI) to broadcast 36 audio channels over three of PanAmSat's satellites. CRI is the only overseas broadcaster in the People's Republic of China. PanAmSat also announced that Mexico's Pegaso Banda Ancha has selected PanAmSat to support its new satellite-based broadband Internet service to provide nationwide two-way broadband service in that country. In a related development, Pegaso has also chosen PanAmSat's EdgeAccess system to provide Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.
