Chubb Buys German Company
Chubb PLC, the global fire safety and security services division of United Technologies Corp., has acquired the privately owned Ahlbrandt Technische Anlagen GmbH, a German fire safety company. Ahlbrandt designs, installs and services fire detection, fire alarm communications and smoke extraction systems. It also supplies CCTV, access control and intruder alarm systems. Ahlbrandt will become part of Chubb's Continental Europe Region, a leading player in the European fire safety market. Financial details were not disclosed.

MeadWestvaco Acquires Tillibra of Brazil
Stamford-based MeadWestvaco has acquired the business of Tillibra S.A. Productos de Papelaria, a leading Brazilian producer of retail consumer and office products and stationery. Tillibra, a family-owned business, was founded in 1928 and employs 1,000 employees in Bauru, Sao Paulo. MeadWestvaco Corp is a global producer of packaging, coated and specialty papers, consumer and office products and specialty chemicals.

Otis To Modernize Elevators in Madrid's Torre Picasso
Otis Elevator Co., a division of United Technologies Corp., has been awarded a contract by the management of Torre Picasso, a prestigious office tower in Madrid, Spain, to modernize the facility's 18 elevators with Otis' high-speed Elevonic systems, which employ state-of-the-art Otis technology to enhance passenger comfort and convenience, including Early Car Announcement (ECA), Ultra(tm) Roller Guides, luxury car and hall fixtures, Elevator Management System (EMS) and in-car color video displays. The new units replace Otis elevators installed in the 45-story Torre Picasso, named after Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, in 1989.

IMS Acquires United Research China Shanghai
IMS Health Inc. in Fairfield has agreed to acquire United Research China Shanghai, a producer of syndicated pharmaceutical market research audits and value-added insights into the Chinese consumer-health market. The acquisition is subject to government approval, but when completed, the deal will provide the most complete picture available of prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical activity in China, one of the world's fastest-growing pharmaceutical markets.

Praxair Will Supply Petrochemicals to China
Praxair China, a subsidiary of Praxair Inc in Danbury, has signed a contract to supply industrial gasses to a new $4.3 billion integrated petrochemical facility in Daya Bay, Huizhou in Guangdong Province, China. The contract represents the largest capital investment ever for a Sino-foreign joint venture. Praxair will supply high purity oxygen and nitrogen from air separation units that will be constructed adjacent to the CSPS site.

International Paper Sells Pulp Business to Canadian Company
International Paper has reached an agreement to sell the capital stock of its Weldwood of Canada, Ltd. subsidiary to West Fraser Timber Co., Ltd. of Vancouver for approximately $950 million. The Weldwood agreement follows International Paper's sale of the Carter Holt Harvey tissue business and the purchase of Box USA, producer of corrugated packaging. The sale is intended to provide operating cash to refocus International Paper's businesses and improve profitability.

ATMI Opens China Office
ATMI Inc. in Danbury, a supplier of materials and materials packaging to semiconductor manufacturers, has announced that its environmental abatement equipment business, ATMI Treatment Systems, has opened a new office in Songjiang, China, near Shanghai. The office will support local sales and provide technical support and spare parts to semiconductor fabricators in Shanghai. Through its ATMI Treatment Systems subsidiary, the company provides technology that improves wafer yields and lowers operating costs.

Imagistics Acquires Canada's Doering & Brown
Imagistics International Inc. of Trumbull, which markets, sells, and services high-performance copiers and facsimile machines, has acquired Doering & Brown, an independent copier and multifunction products dealership in Canada. Doering & Brown currently operates six branch offices in Western Ontario and services more than 8,000 machines across the province. Imagistics has a direct sales network that includes the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.

Gerber Scientific Opens Tech Center in China
Trumbull-based Gerber Scientific has opened a new 27,000-sq. ft. Advanced Technology Center in the Caohejing Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai. The center's primary tenant is Gerber Technology, a manufacturer and developer of automation systems for the sewn-products and flexible-materials industries, including apparel, automotive, and furniture. Gerber Scientific Inc. has 24 sales and service offices in China, serving more than 1,500 industrial customers. Operations housed at the center include software testing, systems training, customer phone support, local product development, engineering, and purchasing.

Bayer and Schering-Plough Enter Alliance
Bayer HealthCare's Specialty Pharmaceuticals division, headquartered in West Haven, and Kenilworth, N.J.-Schering-Plough, have completed an agreement under the terms of which Schering-Plough will market and distribute Bayer's primary care pharmaceutical products in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including the German company's antibiotics Avelox and Cipro, Adalat, its cardiovascular product, and Bay 43-9006, a cancer drug, which is being developed with Onyx Pharmaceuticals. Bayer HealthCare's Specialty Pharmaceuticals division, headquartered in West Haven, will be compensated to promote certain Schering-Plough cancer products in the U.S. and in key European markets.

Export Assistance Center Presents Award To Sheffield Labs
Sheffield Laboratories of New London has received an Export Achievement Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Sheffield Laboratories manufactures toothpaste, toiletries, creams, and other over-the-counter skin care products. Export Achievement Awards recognize small- and medium-sized companies that have entered the international marketplace for the first time or that have entered new foreign markets. Sheffield successfully used programs and services available through the Connecticut Export Assistance Center in Middletown.

PanAmSat Signs Agreement with Brazil-Based RIT
PanAmSat in Wilton announced that its Brazilian subsidiary has signed a multi-year contract with Rede Internacional de Talevisao, a major Brazilian television network. RIT will use capacity on PanAmSat's PAS-9 Atlantic Ocean Region satellite to develop new markets and expand the geographic reach of its cultural and educational programming. The satellite serves international broadcasters in the U.K., China, Germany, Japan, Venezuela, and the U.S. to deliver programming to the Americas and the Caribbean.

Xerox Wins $23 Million Brazilian Contract
Xerox Corp based in Stamford has won separate document services contracts from HSBC Bank in Brazil and in the U.K. The Brazil portion of the contract includes the replacement of 3,000 printers and improved systems at the bank's three major administrative locations in Brazil. The U.K. portion of the contract includes services and equipment in HSBC's retail banking facilities in the U.K.

GE To Supply Wind Turbines to Quebec
GE Energy, the Atlanta subsidiary of Fairfield-based General Electric, has been selected to supply up to 660 wind turbines, totaling 990 megawatts of wind-generated electricity, for eight projects in Quebec that will be placed on line between years 2006 and 2012. The deal supports Quebec's 2003 government Decrees 352 and 353, which call for additional power to be supplied by renewable sources of energy, particularly wind power. GE Energy will supply 740 megawatts of wind turbines to Cartier Wind Energy and 250 megawatts of wind turbines to Northland Power Inc./Northland Power Income Fund. Cartier is a consortium of Innergex, TransCanada Energy and Renewable Energy Systems USA, while Northland Power is a leading Canadian developer of independent power projects.
