Novell Acquires Salmon Ltd.
Novell Inc. in Waltham has acquired Salmon Ltd., an IT services and consulting firm headquartered in Watford, England. The acquisition will expand Novell's identity management, Linux, education, services in the UK and in Europe and will focus on Web-based applications and services.

Trans-Atlantic Law Firms to Merge
Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP, a commercial law firm with offices in Boston and nationwide, and the British law firm Nicholson Graham & Jones in London have announced plans for one of the largest trans-Atlantic law firm mergers ever. The merger combines K & L's 800 U.S.-based lawyers and NG&J's 135 London-based lawyers. First-year fee revenue of the merged companies is expected to exceed $500 million.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Wins Approval of Anti-HIV Drug
Cambridge-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. and partner GlaxoSmithKline received approval from the European Commission for the protease inhibitor Telzir, a treatment for HIV-infected adults. Telzir is currently marketed in the U.S. under the brand name Lexiva. GSK and Vertex will jointly promote Telzir in European markets.

Reebok Acquires Montreal's The Hockey Company
Canton-based Reebok has acquired 92% of the outstanding shares of The Hockey Company Holdings, Inc., a Montreal designer, marketer, and manufacturer of hockey apparel and equipment whose well-known brands include CCM, JOFA, and KOHO.

GlassHouse Acquires Two U.K. Companies
Glasshouse Technologies in Framingham, a leading provider of IT storage and backup systems and consulting, will acquire two UK-based companies, Source Consulting and Sagitta Performance Systems. The acquisition of two of the largest storage services companies in Europe will add 300 clients and position GlassHouse for a larger share of a data storage and services market that will exceed $30 billion by 2007, according to Gartner Dataquest.

MassMutual Buys Taiwan Fund
MassMutual Financial Group has acquired a controlling interest in Taiwan's sixth-largest mutual fund firm, Fuh Hwa Investment Trust Co. Ltd. The acquisition increases MassMutual's Asian presence by assuming management of Fuh Hwa's $4.1 billion in assets.

Biogen Opens Swiss Headquarters
Cambridge-based Biogen has opened its new international headquarters in Zug, Switzerland. The headquarters will house Biogen's global commercial and administrative operations and give Biogen access to skilled, educated workers in one of Switzerland's leading biotechnology centers.

Accusphere To Expand in Europe
Accusphere, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Watertown, has announced a license/supply agreement with Nycomed for the European development and marketing of AI-700, a medication for diagnosing coronary heart disease.

Worldwide Licensing Rights Granted to Gloucester Pharmaceuticals
Gloucester Pharmaceuticals has acquired worldwide license rights to develop and commercialize FK228, an anti-cancer drug developed by Osaka, Japan-based Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. FK228 is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma and hormone refractory prostate cancer. Gloucester Pharmaceuticals will assume control of current trials and oversee trials related to T-cell lymphoma.

Avid Wins Canadian Contract
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has awarded a $6.7 million contract to Avid Technology, Inc, headquartered in Tewksbury, to install digital newsroom environments at CBC television stations in Ottawa, Edmonton, and Quebec City. The three installations will be followed by a fourth, at Toronto Broadcast Centre, CBC's largest television facility. The installations will include proprietary Avid systems for managing, storing and integrating audio and video data.

Keane Acquires U.K Company
Boston's Keane Inc., an IT outsourcing company, has acquired Fast Track Holdings Limited, a U.K.-based consulting company that specializes in large-scale SAP implementations. The move expands Keane's base of expertise and opens new markets for Keane's current portfolio of client services.

ThinkGlobal Receives Award
ThinkGlobal Inc., a custom publishing and editorial services company, recently received an APEX 2004 publication excellence award for its ThinkGlobal international trade "newsfolios." ThinkGlobal publishes quarterly international trade newsletters in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts and New York. The APEX 2004 Award for Publication Excellence recognizes excellence in publications work by professional communicators. The awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve communications effectiveness.
