![]() Global Business Briefs International Trade Newsfolio Renamed ThinkGlobal Connecticut The Port Connecticut Transportation & International Trade Newsfolio has been renamed ThinkGlobal Connecticut. Launched in 2002, ThinkGlobal Connecticut is the state's premier source for news and information related to international trade activities. The magazine-style publication, which reaches approximately 14,000 readers each quarter, is published by ThinkGlobal Incorporated and sponsored by UPS. More information is available online at http://www.thinkglobal.net Sarro Replaces Auletta as Chair of the District Export Council Dawn (Rodriguez) Sarro, vice president of Sovereign Bank's International Trade Banking Group, has been chosen to chair the CT District Export Council (see related interview on this page). The council, a statewide advisory group affiliated with the U.S. Department of Commerce, selected Sarro to succeed Louis J. Auletta Sr., who led the DEC for 11 years. Marjorie Anderson Retires from World Affairs Council Marjorie Anderson recently retired as executive director of the Hartford World Affairs Council after serving at the helm for more than 30 years. During her tenure, the council brought to Hartford a host of prominent diplomats, economic experts and world leaders. Succeeding Anderson as executive director is Felicity Harley, a British expatriate with extensive experience in financial management, fund raising, organizational development, and the development of programs for youth and cultural institutions. World Affairs Council Hears Positive Economic Projection In his annual international outlook remarks to the Hartford World Affairs Council, Edward Guay, the head of Wintonbury Risk Management in Bloomfield, said that despite the risks of terrorism and financial hangovers from the past, the world is growing stronger. Production and employment in the United States are poised to recover after the excesses of the late 1990s, he said during a recent program in Hartford. Moreover other countries are responding to the loss of their artificial currency advantage - as the result of a weaker dollar - by stimulating their domestic economies. Guay expects the world economy to improve over the next two years, with the United States fueling that growth. Cellular Genomics Expands Partnership with Italian Company Cellular Genomics Inc., based in Branford, has announced the expansion of its ongoing joint kinase discovery program with Serono SA, an Italian pharmaceutical company. Under the original collaborative research agreement announced, CGI is applying its proprietary chemical genetics technologies to four kinase drug targets. A kinase is an enzyme that acts as a catalyst in specific biochemical reactions. The technologies have broad applications across all phases of drug discovery. Information Holdings Acquires British Company Stamford-based Information Holdings Inc. has announced that its Liquent Inc. subsidiary has acquired CDC Solutions Ltd. Based in the United Kingdom, CDC provides software and services that facilitate the preparation and submission of regulatory filings in the life sciences industry. Its products are used by leading pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies to create new drug applications, reports, proposals and technical documentation. Information Holdings Inc. is a leading provider of information products, software solutions and services for the intellectual property, life sciences and IT learning markets. CBIA To Promote Manufacturing The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) has launched a major marketing campaign to deliver the message, "Manufacturing: Vital to Connecticut's Future," emphasizing the importance of manufacturing to the state's economy. Throughout the campaign, CBIA will advocate that the government enforce international trade agreements, currency valuation requirements and intellectual property rights without retreating from the global marketplace and the exporting opportunities it provides. Insurance Executive Wins Southwest Airlines Tickets in Annual ThinkGlobal Sweepstakes Richard Bridges, Boston-based account executive for Roanoke Trade Services Inc., has won the 2003 ThinkGlobal/Port Connecticut sweepstakes. Bridges, whose name was selected in a random drawing, will receive two roundtrip tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies. Roanoke Trade specializes in providing insurance to firms involved in global trade and transportation.
